Fábrica de palabras (Word Factory)

Fábrica de palabras (Word Factory) - Project for college

A small educational Flash game/interactive application for learning Spanish that I made for college. I did everything from the illustrations and the design to the coding in ActionScript 3.

As a design exercise, our professor challenged us to try and avoid the typical cartoonish look of most educational games, so I decided to try a completely different style, one which was probably influenced by my (at the time) obsession with the game Machinarium.

Following the idea of words as the building blocks of language, and letters and syllables as the building blocks of words, a word factory where words were assembled from letters seemed like a good concept for the game. And with the visual style in mind, it made sense for the game to be about correcting the (spelling!) errors produced by this old, rusty and a little broken down factory where not everything works as it should.
Mini game/level 1: spell check

Each word has one error. You need to find it, drag the letter to the trash can and replace it with the right letter from the shelves.
Mini game/level 2: word families

You're given a starting word and the definition of another word in the same family (or some sort of clue). You need to write the related word and then hit the green button. If you don't know it, you can hit the red button to get the next word. For example: if you're given the word "flor" (flower) and "su diminutivo" (its diminutive), you need to write "florcita" (little flower).
Mini game/level 3: sort the words according to their stressed syllable

You have to send the package to the conveyor belt labelled with the correct category for the word on the side of the box. To do so, you have to click on the lever until the right word category is displayed, and then hit the button on top to activate the elevator.
Score Screen
Saving and high scores were not implemented, hence the "max" where the highest score would go.
Process

All the screens were sketched on paper, scanned and then digitally painted.
